What is a TAC?

The Type Allocation Code is assigned by GSMA to a manufacturer for each device model. One model usually has several TACs for different regions and storage sizes.

Anatomy of an IMEI

Every IMEI has the same 15-digit structure. Each part tells you something different.

TAC#1–8

Type Allocation Code. Identifies the manufacturer and exact model. The first two digits are the reporting body.

Serial#9–14

Unique number the manufacturer assigns to this single device.

Check digit#15

Calculated from the other 14 with the Luhn formula. Catches typos.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my TAC not found?

Our free database is community-maintained and doesn't contain every model. The paid report confirms the model from official sources.

Can a TAC identify the exact phone?

No, only the model. The remaining digits are the device's serial number.
